Managed Security Services Providers (MSSPs) have been relying on vendor-specific tools to manually configure equipment (FW, IPS, UTM, Proxies) from different vendors. This led most of them to limit their choice of vendors to a few in order to keep their opex under control. That operational approach worked fine with a security ecosystem nicely siloed from the vendor through the channel and down to the end user.

As security technologies embrace virtualization and new vendors emerge, it is less conceivable that an MSSP would provide a relevant service for a broad addressable market with a very limited set of vendors. Hence reinventing an SOC capable of transparently supporting any security vendor or system is now paramount. Both admin and end users look for a single-pane-of-glass experience.

Secondly, the first wave of MSSPs has grown as manually intensive businesses, with little or no automation. Reports are analyzed by experts, who then take remediation action and reconfigure the security infrastructure accordingly.

This approach is costly and won’t scale at the speed of virtualization, nor will the cost of service production permit the generalization of security services across all enterprise segments. Automation is the solution, yet for it to happen a tight integration between the reporting engines and the security element configuration management systems has to occur.
